Following Tom Cruise’s recent reveal that a Top Gun sequel is indeed happening, now comes word on the current frontrunner to direct the follow-up.

As per Variety, Joseph Kosinski is the person currently heading up Paramount and Skydance’s wish list when it comes to directors. Kosinski, of course, worked with Cruise on Oblivion.

It’s believed that Cruise met with various directors before Mission: Impossible 6 started production so that Top Gun 2 would be ready to start as soon as the latest Mission: Impossible movie wrapped. Despite the pair’s established relationship due to the aforementioned Oblivion, supposedly Kosinski was established as the top choice for the Top Gun 2 gig due to wowing all involved with his vision for the sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 classic.

At this stage, it’s being reported that no official offer has been made to TRON: Legacy helmer Kosinski but that one is said to be imminent.

As ever, expect more on this as we get it.
