This past weekend saw it revealed that director Tim Miller has departed 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool sequel, and now it appears that the film may well have found Miller’s replacement.

Mashable is reporting that John Wick co-director David Leitch is the current frontrunner for the gig. What makes Leitch unique is that as well as years of second unit work, he and Chad Stahleski own 87Eleven Action Design, a Hollywood choreography studio that puts together fight sequences and trains stuntmen. As such, Leitch is somebody who certainly has the action chops that Deadpool 2 would require.

Up next for David Leitch is the Charlize Theron and James McAvoy-starring The Coldest Day and he’s also been working with Chad Stahleski on John Wick: Chapter 2. The pair of Leith and Stahleski are also adapting Valiant’s Bloodshot and Image Comics’ Cowboy Ninja Viking, with Chris Pratt to star in the latter.

If Leitch does indeed end up helming Deadpool 2, he’ll join the returning Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The original film brought home an impressive $782 million from a budget of just $58 million.

So far, all that we know on Deadpool 2 is that it will see Reynolds’ Wade Wilson joined in action by Cable and Domino, two comic book fan favourite mutants. The plan was for the sequel to start shooting early next year, although that may be delayed depending on how quickly 20th Century Fox can find a replacement for Tim Miller.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
