Hap and Leonard is perhaps the best new TV series of 2016, at least in this writer’s opinion, so it was met with much jubilation that SundanceTV announced that there will be a second season. Now you might be thinking that this comedy noir, crime-fi series isn’t really STARBURST territory, but it is. Hap and Leonard is based on the books by Joe R. Lansdale, author of cult favourite Bubba Ho-Tep and Cold in July (for which this writer reviewed the DVD), and someone who also contributed several scripts for Batman: The Animated Series as well as writing a celebrated run on Jonah Hex. And if that isn’t enough, Cold in July and Stake Land’s director Jim Mickle is the man responsible for bringing the bizarre misadventures of Hap Collins and Leonard Pine to the small screen.

Starring James Purefoy and Michael Kenneth Williams, the second season consisting of six episodes will debut in 2017. John Wirth (Hell on Wheels, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) joins the project as showrunner and executive producer for Season 2.

Developed for TV by Jim Mickle and Nick Damici, Season 2 will take inspiration from Mucho Mojo, the second book in Lansdale’s series.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing Hap and Leonard back for another season with these completely unique characters,” said Joel Stillerman, President of Original Programming and Development for AMC and SundanceTV. “James, Michael and the creative and production team did a superb job bringing Joe Lansdale’s characters to life in Season 1, and Sundance viewers responded accordingly. We can’t wait to see what the boys get up to in Season 2.”

Hap and Leonard is available in the UK on Amazon Prime and cannot be recommended enough.
