In some surprising news, NBC has wielded the axe and announced that they will not be renewing Hannibal at the end of the show’s current season.

On the news, creator Bryan Fuller said, “NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers. Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure.”

As alluded to there, the problem with Hannibal is that it wasn’t bringing in the strong ratings that all involved were hoping for. Sure, if viewers love the show and critics rave about it, that’s great, but if the viewings figures are lower than expected than that’s a serious problem for any network.

Despite this massive setback, it appears that Fuller has hope that the show can be saved, adding, “Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC.”

Currently on its third season, Hannibal will finish up its remaining episodes before then being faced with an uncertain future. Maybe if there’s enough support for the show then NBC will reconsider their decision, or it could even be that Bryan Fuller and Co. seek out a home elsewhere in order for the show to continue.

Expect more on this as it develops.
