Prominent UK based-convention organisers have announced their intention to bring the World Science Fiction Convention, better known as Worldcon, to the UK. The event is known for being one of the oldest and grandest (and most talked about) conventions on the planet. It is also the event that hosts the frequently controversial science-fiction awards, The Hugos.

The United Kingdom last hosted a Worldcon in London in just 2014, selling the most memberships in the convention’s 76-year history (only members can attend Worldcon, but anyone can be a member).

The intention to bid for a UK Worldcon 2024 was confirmed earlier this month at Novacon in Nottingham. The announcement was made by Co-Chair of Loncon 3, Alice Lawson, and the group includes other prominent figures in the convention organising circuit, including James Bacon, Emma England, Esther MacCallum-Stewart and Vanessa May.

Despite the name, Worldcon has a tendency to be in the United States of America. This is in part due to the large body of members who are from the USA. Worldcon bids are voted for two years in advance by members of Worldcon. This year, members determined that the 2017 Worldcon would be in Helsinki, Finland after a very strong campaign by Finnish fans. A campaign to bring World to Dublin in 2019 in currently underway.
