Remember the news late last year of a new take on Zorro? You know, the post-apocalyptic one? Well the film has landed itself an official title and a director.

Lantica Media and Sobini Films have officially announced that Gravity screenwriter Jones Cuaron will write and direct this latest take on Zorro. The film, from this day forward, will simply be known as Z. Whether you’re reading that as a ‘Zed’ or a ‘Zee’, it’s still a remarkably short title. Then again, Zorro was a whole two syllables.

On this news, Sobini’s Mark Amin said, “When I saw Desierto, I was impressed with Jonas’ command of action and suspense, his great visual eye, and the strong performances he elicited from his actors.”

Lantica’s Antonio Gennari chimed in, “We are very fortunate to have Jonas on this film. His love of cinema is evident in his work and he is very talented in his ability to tell a compelling story. We look forward to seeing where his vision will take us.”

When the project itself was announced last year, the film was described as “a post-apocalyptic take on the myth of Zorro… set in the near future but keeps the idea of a masked and caped stranger taking on tyrants”. Righto.

At present, the plan is for Z to start principal photography this summer, with a release likely planned for next year.
