Clarifying the statements of Vice President Phil Harrison, Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One will have a recording buffer of five minutes.

During the Eurogamer Expo Harrison was quoted as stating that Xbox One will be capable of recording “as much or as little as they want.” Something which would have given them a major edge over their competitors of the Wii U and Playstation 4. However, it seems that this statement was taken out of context. When Game Informer published an article on the subject, Microsoft soon contacted the magazine with an update. In this, the company stated that the time limit remained unchanged with the following statement:

“We can confirm the recording buffer in Game DVR is 5 minutes, which we feel is optimized to take advantage of high-quality production features and advanced social mechanics in Xbox One.”

It’s not certain what Harrison was referring to when speaking about this feature, but it was made clear that any recorded clips would be capped at five minutes in total. This is only one third the time which Sony is offering with the Playstation 4, but Microsoft’s console does offer a number of basic editing features to clean up footage and record commentary to make up for this.

It has been speculated by some fans that Harrison might have been referring to the ability to link clips together, but nothing currently exists to substantiate this point.
