We’d heard rumblings of it, but it’s now official: Game of Thrones will come to an end after its eighth season.

With its recent sixth season, Thrones hit heights not seen since the show’s infancy as it gave audiences some huge shockers and delivered some resolution on a whole host of fronts. Now, though, HBO’s Casey Bloys has confirmed that, yes, there’s only another two seasons ahead for this most beloved of genre shows.

Speaking at TCA (courtesy of EW), Bloys confirmed, “Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. Believe me, as the new coming in, if I could get them to do more I would take ten more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think can do the best version of the show.”

This confirms the teases and comments previously put out by executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Of course, there’s already been plenty of speculation that we could get some sort of Thrones spin-off show down the line. On that front, Bloys added, “We’ve talked about it, it’s something I’m not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure that the guys could really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production. It’s a pretty intense production, they’re about to start production soon. I’m open to it. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans for it at this point.”

Game of Thrones will return for its seventh season next summer.
