With only two more seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones left to come before this beloved genre favourite calls it a day, there’s been plenty of rumblings of potential spinoff or prequels shows to happen a little further down the line. Well, on that front there’s now come a huge update.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has actually moved in to development on not just one, not just two, not even three, but four spinoff shows for Thrones. For these shows, the network has four different writing teams working away. Whether any of these four actually get the green light to move forward as a full series remains to be seen, but whichever ones do get the nod will have Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff on board as executive producers, not to mention input from George R.R. Martin.

The actual focus of these shows themselves are unknown at this early stage, although the writing teams for the four potential series are as follows:

– Max Borenstein, whose credits include creating and serving as showrunner on the Minority Report TV series, plus penning the screenplays for Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

– Jane Goldman will be working alongside George R.R. Martin, which is something that will likely please longtime fans of Thrones and genre as a whole. Goldman’s writing credits includes the likes of Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and Kingsman: The Secret Service.

– Brian Helgeland, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of L.A. Confidential and director of A Knight’s Tale.

– Carly Wray and George R.R. Martin will also be teaming up, with Wray best known for her writing work on Mad Men, Constantine and The Leftovers.

As mentioned, there’s absolutely no news right now on what these actual projects will each focus on or even when they will take place. Fear not, though, for we’ll bring you more on all of this as and when we get it.

Game of Thrones returns for its seventh (and second to last!) season on July 16th.
