video games

Whether it’s through interviews with players or by reading match previews, sports fans are fanatical about their respective pastimes and soak up numerous pieces of information dedicated to them. For many, the appeal of playing sports-themed video games is also hard to turn down, particularly given the extensive selection of fun releases that are available to sample on a plethora of prominent gaming platforms.

Be it a soccer-themed product on a leading console machine or a basketball game on a portable handheld device, the sheer number of sports games is highly impressive. Alongside taking in fans’ opinions on YouTube, following highlights on television, and enjoying popular options like online betting ahead of the big clashes, video games enable fans to be transported to the action as they immerse themselves in a sport. Fans can play along as their favorite players or coach their favorite teams. Likewise, there are games with an arcade style or releases that test your nerve with some pressurized shooting challenges.

Essentially, given the popularity of sport, there are so many viable video games to explore in this hugely popular category. Not all of them are necessarily worth breaking the bank for, though. So, as the sports genre of gaming continues to appeal to mass audiences, let’s take a look at five leading options on a variety of platforms below.

Virtua Tennis Challenge is a mobile favorite

Over the years, tennis games have been hit and miss. One title that has delivered in this category, though, is Virtua Tennis Challenge, a much-loved release that is available to sample on multiple platforms. For mobile gamers, though, it’s a title that is receiving special attention as it’s ideal for a portable gaming marathon. With players being able to take part in prestigious tournaments like Wimbledon and having the opportunity to play as some of the sport’s most recognizable players, the mobile spin-off of the popular Virtua Tennis series definitely deserves some attention. There are 50 famous players to choose from, alongside 18 stadiums to play in as you serve and volley your way to victory.

EA Sports FC is the one for football lovers

If you’re partial to a bit of the beautiful game, then EA Sports FC is the release for you. Available to play on leading platforms, such as the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch, the game will satisfy the most discerning of football fans. Offering immaculate graphics and serving up numerous game modes to get stuck into, it features players and teams from the biggest and best leagues in both the men’s and women’s game. From the Premier League to the Champions League, it has it all. Likewise, there is the usual Ultimate Team offering where managers can assemble their dream teams and go up against the game’s huge online community, while players can also explore other modes like Career Mode, Clubs, Volta, and Tournaments. For soccer fans, EA Sports FC really is the game to play right now, with the FIFA replacement receiving plenty of plaudits since it was released in September 2023. If you haven’t played it yet, then you’re in for a treat.

Mutant Football League is a favorite among American football fans

If you’re more interested in American football and require a video game to play from the genre, then Mutant Football League offers a fun twist on the sport. As the title suggests, the game involves superhuman athletes going to war in an arcade-style format. While it certainly doesn’t provide an authentic football gaming package, it’s still plenty of fun for people to experience. From powerful aliens and orcs to formidable robots and mutated humans, there are an array of competitors to choose from here, all of which are capable of elevating your team and improving your chances of success. The game also offers additional obstacles, such as landmines, while players can even make the most of cheat plays. Overall, Mutant Football League definitely isn’t one for any purists, but if you fancy tucking into a game that promises to provide fun, then it delivers in that respect.

Table Tennis Touch is a fun release

If you prefer table tennis over tennis, then Table Tennis Touch is a game you must session. In the same way, the back-and-forth action makes tennis games enticing propositions, table tennis provides the same type of epic rallies. In Table Tennis Touch, you can enjoy a title that offers this and more, particularly given the challenging mini-games to smash your way through and the variety of multiplayer modes that enable players to join forces with loved ones. Table Tennis Touch isn’t the most complicated option you’ll ever play, but it offers strong doses of fun as you aim to fine-tune your game and dominate your rivals.

Football Manager 2024 is a masterpiece

Although aforementioned options like EA Sports FC are pulling in football lovers from around the world, the management aspect of the game isn’t quite up to scratch. As such, many fans of teams like Arsenal and Accrington Stanley are turning to more detailed management products like Football Manager 2024. In fact, the Football Manager series of games have been thriving for years now, but the latest installment of the game is easily the best one yet. Whether you’re keen to take a non-league minnow to the Premier League or you’re desperate for the aforementioned Gunners to finally get their hands on the Champions League, this football simulation boasts immense detail and an array of tools to help you get there. You’re in charge of overseeing player transfers, there are extensive on-field tactics to choose from, staff instructions to issue, you can interact with the board and the media, and an updated match engine brings even more to what many regard as a masterpiece. If you’re keen to replicate the successes of managers like Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson, then Football Manager 2024 is the game for you.
