Fighting the Sky had us fighting to stop plucking our eyes out so we could not see any more of this dreadful shambles. It is about strange alien sounds and lights in the sky, that are investigated by ufologist Lorraine Gardner (Angela Cole) and members of her Unexplained Research Society (URS). The opening starts well with a neat little shock, but it then rambles on for about forty minutes with nothing much happening.
The URS interview a bloke who is kept in a hospital, who says he is from 2074 and was mysteriously dropped from the sky. A woman describes seeing her husband abducted by an alien craft, and some school kids take an interest in the subject. The kids run around in some woods when a Chupacabra-like alien appears on the scene. It is not very friendly. Meanwhile the URS team encounter another similar alien in an abandoned building, where Lorraine is grabbed by it and given a marking on her hand.
There is a bit of action when a UFO follows the kids’ school bus and beams it skywards, and when a fleet of saucers create chaos by zapping the streets of a township. The special effects are low budget and look it! They are so pathetic they make you laugh with relief that something at last is happening, so it is not all bad! Wisely, but rather late in the day, the radio advises in the face of this worldwide invasion that the public should hide away from the aggressive aliens. Anyway, the kids and the URS team end up in an abandoned building in the middle of some woods and confront the aliens. The aliens look mean but are easily dealt with by a simple whack with a bat. After batting away and gassing the aliens, they realise Lorraine is the focus of the aliens’ attention. They are helpless to rescue her from her alien fate, and she disappears to provide us with a ‘surprise’ ending.
Amazingly, it took three writers to create this mess, which basically amounts to a bunch of youngsters running from someone in an unimaginative alien outfit and CGI UFOs. Makes you nostalgic for the 1950s flying saucer masterworks of Ed Wood and his ilk.
