Martin Scorsese is undoubtedly one of the best film directors to have ever been involved in the industry and that is an easy statement to get behind because of the number of awards he has won and the quality films he continues to produce.

In a career that has spanned seven decades, the 78-year-old has managed to earn over 90 nominations at the Academy Awards, over 90 nominations at the BAFTAs and over 60 at the Golden Globes, with several victories having been achieved in various categories.

Of course, over Scorsese’s stellar career, there has been a handful of several exceptional films that he has created, although some would look to the 1990s period as one of the best eras regarding the blockbusters that he provided movie fans and cinemagoers at the time.

We look at the three best films he created in the ’90s and make our point as to why we feel each one has to be considered the best of that decade.

Casino

Created in 1995 and perhaps considered to be in the middle of Scorsese’s stunning career, Casino is one of the best films that the director managed to produce in the 90s because of its ability to bring in several various elements that can be seen in many of his other films, whilst also making things as realistic as possible.

The film follows a story that involves a mobster who manages to take over a Las Vegas casino after being sent to the Sin City area to oversee the family’s crimes. The scenes portrayed within the film make it incredibly realistic, as they feature several different things that would typically be spotted at a casino when playing a game of blackjack, such as the chips, the playing cards, the betting tables and so much more.

Casinos have obviously gained popularity around the world, although it could be suggested that this film has played a role as the 90s is a theme that many developers will appear to throw back to as a form of nostalgia for bettors. Many modern-day players look at games such as the Starburst slot because of the simplicity it provides, offering refreshing throwback elements of the ’90s, which are scarce in today’s modern titles.

Goodfellas

When speaking about the best films from the 1990s that Scorsese created and produced, it would be sacrilege not to mention Goodfellas as one of them; although it only does just fit into the decade as it was released in 1990.

Nonetheless, there is an argument that the movie changed the entire perception and altered the standard that monster movies should follow as the director showed that this type of movie could be shown as tragedies just as effectively as those that had come before it.

Furthermore, Scorsese also managed to bring a lighter side to the film with the use of comedy at times, which is something that had never been used in a genre that would have always been considered serious and nothing else.

Cape Fear

Robert De Niro is a favoured actor of Scorsese’s, as he likes to use the actor for many of his films and it is easy to see why, as De Niro successfully plays the role that is required with real effectiveness. This is clear with his portrayal of Max Cady in the 1991 film, Cape Fear.

De Niro gave everything to the role, including damaging his own teeth by filling them down and having them restored after completion, whilst Scorsese arguably managed to capture a lot of the feelings that were being had in America at the time. The film shows a conflict between Cady and his court-appointed lawyer who he feels did not do enough to keep him out of prison, which is something that many will feel is relatable today.
