Halia Abdel-Meguid has been tapped to write and executive produce the live-action series adaptation of Death Note, based on the hugely popular Japanese manga and anime series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, writes Deadline. The series is in the works at Netflix, with Stranger Things creators Matt & Ross Duffer producing via their newly-launched production company, Upside Down.

This marks Halia Abdel-Meguid ‘s second collaboration with the Duffers, having worked as a writing consultant on their series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman.

The original Death Note centres on a teenager who discovers a mysterious black notebook giving him supernatural power over life and death: by writing a person’s name in the book, he ensures their demise. The teen soon becomes intoxicated with the power as he decides to cleanse the world of all those he deems undesirable while a law enforcement team races to figure out the killings are being carried out and who is behind the ongoing slaughter.

Netflix already made that ill-fated film adaptation in 2017, but the series will (thankfully) be an entirely new take on the source material. No news yet on casting, a potential release date, or further plot details, but stay tuned!
