FMV games have seen a resurgence in recent years with the boom in popularity of choice-driven stories. So the team at Wales Interactive have teamed up with the brilliant Yorkshire-based production company Dark Rift Horror (Book of Monsters, How to Kill Monsters) to bring us the sci-fi horror tale Dead Reset.
You play as Cole Mason, a former surgeon who wakes up in a mysterious bunker-type location with an expectant crew demanding that you perform surgery on a woman. The surgery in question – extracting an alien creature from her stomach. However, things go wrong – everyone dies. But Cole comes back with the knowledge of what happens next. What follows is a series of events where you actually get to learn from your mistakes, attempting to form bonds with other members of the crew – all whilst trying to survive the alien threat and escape with your life intact.
The wonderful thing about FMV games, and this one in particular, is that there is so much replay value, which makes them essentially multiple movies in one, with the ability to reshape the relationships and outcomes through alternative choices. The strength of Dead Reset in particular is the ensemble cast, the practical effects and the Evil Dead meets Alien storyline. Daniel Thrace (Cole) and Lyndsey Craine (Fearne) lead the line with incredible performances, but the standout for us is Dennis Rasaq as Slade – a commanding performance and a well-written character that makes you question whether you should trust him or not with his questionable attitude.
Overall, Dead Reset is one of the most entertaining and well-crafted FMV games available on the market today, with a brilliant script and exciting moments – be sure to add this to your collection today!
