While the news of Kenny F’n Powers and the Pineapple Express director writing the Halloween reboot initially surprised us a little, the more we think about it, the more we’re getting genuinely excited here at Moonbase Alpha for The Shape’s return. With Danny McBride and David Gordon Green joining forces with Blumhouse, Malek Akkad and the iconic John Carpenter, McBride and Gordon Green having been giving a brief indication of what we can expect when we see Michael Myers terrorize the big screen once more next year.

Speaking to Indiewire, McBride explained, “We can’t talk for too much about the Halloween reboot, but David and I had a long talk with each other about when people do these movies, where it goes wrong. ‘What pisses me off when it comes to something I like?’ We all came to the conclusion that remaking something that already works isn’t a good. So we just have a reimagining instead.”

Those comments follow what McBride has previously said, with him having already talked about how the writing pair are focussing on the first two Halloween movies and how they’re looking to continue Michael’s story in a grounded way.

Discussing how the project came together, Gordon Green added, “Jason Blum came to me. I’m a huge horror fan and I’ve never made one. I developed Suspiria for several years with Luca Guadagnino, who’s finishing directing it. It’s going to be incredible. I woke up at a hotel and had this e-mail from Jason that said, ‘Halloween reboot. You get it. What do you say?’ I was just like, ‘What the fuck does this mean?’ I wrote him back and said, ‘Call me immediately, my body is reacting to this,’ because Halloween is one of those influential movies that I was never allowed to see and lied about having not seen to my parents for years. It hit all the right taboos, and it had a lore to it. We’re just writing it now.”

On having to pitch his idea to the legendary John Carpenter, Gordon Green said, “The coolest part about that was going to John Carpenter and pitching him. If he didn’t like the take, it wouldn’t bode well. He’s one of my biggest heroes. I think we were just so concerned about getting the job that we didn’t think about how fucking scary that was to go sit down in front of him to tell him how we’d continue the story he’d created. It wasn’t until afterward that I realised, ‘Fuck, this could go so badly. We’ll be really hurt if he schools us right now.’

Seemingly Carpenter must’ve liked the pitch a lot as now it’s all systems go on revisiting the streets of Haddonfield. With Carpenter already confirmed to serve as an executive producer, the Master of Horror himself has also teased that he may actually do the film’s score – which is something that has the attention of many a longtime genre fan.

At present, Michael Myers is set to stalk the silver screen once more on October 19th, 2018.
