Charming and quirky queer couple Marnina and Micah form the musical comedy duo Couplet, who specialise in charming, quirky and queer songs about life. Folksy style silly songs about anything and everything are absolutely something STARBURST readers seem to love, so we had to check it out.
Honey Honey Moon Moon is a show about finding your sweet-heart, falling head over heels in love and deciding to take the plunge and get married, an experience that about half the population of the UK will have at some point in their life. Specifically, this show focuses on organising a wedding; making a list, figuring out a venue, all that sort of thing. Anyone who’s gone through that will understand that there are a lot of bizarre and odd situations to mine for comedy gold in that scenario.
Though no wedding is ever smooth, Micah and Marina do seem to have had an exceptionally bumpy ride, which is fortunate for us because they’ve been able to turn that journey into a series of very entertaining and fun songs.
The show tackles some pretty challenging stuff head-on, with a skip in its step, a song in its heart and a half-brick in its handbag. Much of the humour comes from tackling obstacles that really shouldn’t exist, and how sometimes it’s hard not to feel like the world is cursed.
Musically, the combination of violin and acoustic guitar works really well, and the pair are synced in a way that feels almost supernatural. Their storytelling has a feral and wild charm to it; this is a larger-than-life couple who understand that together they are unstoppable. Well, maybe not completely unstoppable, but pretty close.
Honey Honey Moon Moon is essentially an hour of being stuck in a shipping container with two very charming, very talented people who have some amazing stories to tell and some very silly songs to perform. Lovely, memorable and absolutely worth the time to go and see (though you could just go and download their songs.) Amazing, heartwarming stuff.
