To many of us here at Moonbase Alpha, there’s a special place in our hearts for the golden age of Hanna-Barbera properties of yesteryear. And so, it’s great to see that Warner Brothers’ long-gestating Jetsons movie has finally brought in a director.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Conrad Vernon has been hired to develop The Jetsons. Vernon will be best known to genre fans for the likes of Sausage Party, Monsters vs. Aliens and Shrek 2, and at present he’s working on putting the film together with a view to directing.

In a landscape made up of the likes of Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, The Yogi Bear Show, Wacky Races and Top Cat, Hanna-Barbera created The Jetsons in 1962. Pulling inspiration from The Flintstones, the cartoon series took the regular family unit and put it in a different setting – this time putting the titular family in a space age future as opposed to the stone age.

A 1990 animated film would follow – the does-exactly-as-it-says-on-the-tin Jetsons: The Movie – and the last few years have seen a new take on this old favourite spinning its wheels. In 2015, both Adam Shankman and Robert Rodriguez were attached to direct a live-action picture, but that ultimately got stuck in development hell. Even this year there’s been life in this old favourite with the straight-to-DVD The Jetsons and WWE: Robo-WrestleMania!
