It seems barely a day or week goes by without a new remake surfacing… and now comes word that next up on the reboot table is Starship Troopers.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, with Columbia Pictures having brought in Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, a pair best known for penning the likes of Freddy vs. Jason and the Friday the 13th remake, to write the film’s screenplay. The duo have also worked on the Dwayne Johnson-starring Baywatch movie that’s due to hit the big screen next year.

Taking to Twitter, Swift and Shannon said, “For the record, we think Verhoeven’s version is amazing and we aren’t trying to redo it. Will talk more about it soon, but we’re excited!”

The early word is that this new movie will pull more from Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel than Paul Verhoeven’s cult favourite 1997 effort. In loose terms, the central plot involves the human race being at war with a whole load of bug-like aliens. Verhoeven’s ’97 movie featured the likes of Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris, Jake Busey, Michael Ironside, and the ever-great Clancy Brown.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
