SCALARAMA 2014, the nationwide celebration of cinema, which takes place from 1st- 30th September, has announced details of their programme.

Now in its fourth year, the season began as a tribute and celebration of the infamous London cinema The Scala, which provided lo-fi thrills to a generation of film fans desperate to see the most obscure films as well as cult classics. The members-only cinema also hosted all-nighters and events with appearances from the likes of Herschell Gordon Lewis, John Waters, Chow Yun Fat and Jorg Buttgereit.

Among the 400 events happening at 250 venues in 100 towns are screenings of such films as:

Jorg Buttgereit’s NEKROMANTIK

John Water’s POLYESTER (complete with scratch n’ sniff cards!)

Wes Craven’s THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (from a 35mm print!)

Silent classic DAS CABINET DES DR CALIGARI

Saul Bass’ PHASE IV (with original ending!)

and several others which make up the core programme element, but locally there are many rare gems to be found including:

Jean Rollin’s LA ROSE DE FER (THE IRON ROSE)

Tod Browning’s MARK OF THE VAMPIRE, Mario Bava’s BLACK SABBATH and the HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR episode THE HOUSE THAT BLED TO DEATH (As a fabulous triple bill in Brighton)

NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE (’80s stinker starring George Lazenby and Gene Simmons of KISS as a villainous hermaphrodite!)

David Cronenberg’s VIDEODROME plus many more.

There will certainly be something for everyone during the eclectic season of cinema, with screenings taking place in clubs, pubs and regular cinemas throughout the land.
