Since it was announced that hot-ticket director Christopher Nolan had set a new movie at Universal for release in the summer of 2026, the call sheet has been growing longer and buzzier week after week. The latest addition to this star-studded mystery project? None other than Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron will be joining the cast, which already includes previous Nolan collaborators Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson, as well as new additions Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Lupita Nyong’o.
Nolan writes and directs the project for Universal Pictures, which is due to release the feature on July 17th, 2026. Nolan earned his first Academy Award for Oppenheimer last year, which was his first project with Universal after having remained loyal to Warner Bros. since 2002. Nolan moved to Universal after Warner temporarily abandoned exclusive theatrical distribution.
Nolan is keeping so tight-lipped about the project that sources can’t even agree on the genre – some have suggested it would be a period vampire thriller, others a helicopter actioner. The filmmaker is producing alongside his wife and partner, Emma Thomas, for their Syncopy banner. Filming is expected to begin in the first half of 2025.
Charlize Theron has a number of other upcoming projects, including the sequels for Atomic Blonde and The Old Guard.
