Following the recent news that his longtime collaborator David Leitch is indeed to direct Deadpool 2, now comes word that Chad Stahelski is the man tasked with helming the upcoming Highlander reboot.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Stahelski, who’s likely best known for co-directing John Wick and its upcoming sequel with Leitch, will be overseeing this redo of an old favourite. Neal H. Moritz and Peter Davis will be serving as producers on the film.

On this news, Stahelski said, “I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school. Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colourful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”

A new take on Highlander has been in development since back in 2008, and back in 2014 it was announced that The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s Cedric Nicolas-Troyan was to direct the reboot with Tom Cruise playing a mentor figure in the same vein as Sean Connery’s Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez. Now, though, all that’s known is that it will be Chad Stahelski who’ll be directing this new movie.

Highlander began life back in 1986, with Christopher Lambert playing Connor MacLeod, an immortal swordsman who’d spent centuries battling and beheading his fellow immortals due to the mantra of “There can be only one.” Lambert was joined in that film by Clancy Brown as the villainous Kurgan, not to mention the aforementioned Sean Connery. In total, five sequels have followed over the past three decades, most recently 2007’s Highlander: The Source. Additionally, there’s also been several live-action and animated TV series, plus a whole host of novels.

As ever, expect more on this Highlander reboot as and when it develops.
