The fantasy adventure game book series DESTINY QUEST will not have its fourth book published by Gollancz, according to the author, Michael J. Ward.  We understand that Gollancz has no plans to commission a fourth book in the DESTINY QUEST series. We know of no plans that any publisher intends to continue the series.

DESTINY QUEST was seen by many as a revival of the old school adventure game books popular in the eighties, but used clever game mechanics and cunning storytelling tricks to give it a video game feel to the books.

Mr Ward told STARBURST Magazine “I think in this day and age, gamebooks are always going to be a bit of a high-risk venture. I feel quite privileged that I got to write three books in the series that I am really proud of, each book, expanding and improving on the last. Of course, I am disappointed that Gollancz did not have enough confidence and faith in the series to extend my contract, but it came as no surprise.”

We have not been able to get an official response from Gollancz on this matter at this time.

The books have recently enjoyed a growing popularity and there has been a steady rise in interest in adventure game books in general; there’s even a Fighting Fantasy Convention launching this year. The author stated on his blog that he has not ruled out a crowd-funding campaign. He said “Television series get cancelled – that’s pretty permanent. But books are different. They refuse to stay down.”
