The first Blue Beetle trailer from Warner Bros. and DC has crawled onto our screens. Blue Beetle introduces Palmera City native Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who gains a superpowered armour after an alien Scarab chooses him as his symbiotic host. While coming to terms with his newfound abilities, he must also uncover the reason why the scarab was sent to Earth.

Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña stars in the feature from director Angel Manuel Soto and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. This is DC’s first film to centre on a Latino superhero. It also stars Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon (who replaced Sharon Stone as the villain Victoria Kord), and George Lopez.

Blue Beetle is also one of only three DC films yet to be released that come from before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the studio – The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom being the other two, to release on June 16th and December 25th, respectively. It’s not yet known whether another Blue Beetle outing is part of the duo’s planned slate.

The feature was initially meant to release to streaming as a HBO Max film, but Warner Bros. later changed it to a theatrical. The film is now slated for August 18th.
