With the King of Atlantis set to get his own solo movie following his appearance in next year’s Justice League, now comes some word on who Jason Momoa’s Marine Marvel will be going up against in James Wan’s Aquaman.

The Wrap is reporting that the villain of Aquaman will be, as many fans had speculated, none other than Black Manta. The rogue debuted back in 1967’s Aquaman #35 and went on to become the King of Atlantis’ greatest foe. What often caught the interest of many comic book readers was the mysterious nature of Black Manta, with him not given any semblance of an origin until the 1990s, and even then his origin story has changed over the following years. The initial depiction of the character saw him have a grudge against the sea due to having been abused by the crew of a ship. Seeing Aquaman as a symbol of the sea, Black Manta focussed his vengeance on the King of Atlantis. In subsequent years, the origin of Manta was changed to show that his anger at Aquaman is because he blames the hero for the death of his father. Either way, the real name and real story behind Black Manta is largely left shrouded in mystery and uncertainty.

As for powers and abilities, Black Manta is someone who has no exact superpowers to speak of. Instead, he’s just an all-round badass, brutal fighter who is in top physical condition. And, of course, he has a nifty-looking trademark suit that allows him to head down to the depths of the ocean.

With Will Beall currently working on the screenplay for James Wan’s Aquaman, the film is currently set for a July 27th, 2018 release. As mentioned, Momoa’s Aquaman will next appear in Justice League, which arrives in cinemas next November.
