Avengers Wars of the Realms – Heroclix

One of the joys of Heroclix is the way you can create ridiculous mash-ups of various Marvel storylines. We have seen several Marvel books that have covered the idea of ‘what happens when the Avengers go full Asgard’, and this new expansion for Heroclix tries very hard to cover it all.

Each booster has five models; they’re well sculpted plastic and the models are pre-painted.  The War of The Realms range features mostly cosmic characters

The set features perhaps the best version of the Hulk we’ve ever seen in the Heroclix range, and there have been a lot of hulks in the past.  This version looks like a proper muscled monster.  They are also plenty of characters from Asgardians of the Galaxy storyline, including a version of Hercules in yellow and green space armour and a new sculpt of Nebula.  Oh, and version of Thanos wielding Mjolnir.

None Asgardian pieces include Blade and Black Panther.  Both are strong close combat and leadership style pieces and well worth a look.  Of course the fun comes when we mix Asgard with mainstream heroes. There’s an Asgardian Spiderman, he’s sculpted with gold helmet and funky looking shield. There’s a nice version of Captain America with the set also, and of course we get a Jane Foster version of Thor who looks very dynamic.

Rules wise, this set comes with some pretty efficiently worked out characters. For example Nebula is built as a ‘run and gun’ character who’s hard to knock out without lots of damage. Magic hammer wielding Thanos is very, very beefy and has many infinity stone style options. The Spider-Man is a basically a super-tough version of the well known hero. This set’s version of Hulk grants toughness to his team mates (like wise, similar Avenger models can grant their signature powers to allies).  The Jane Foster Thor has a ranged attack that can fly around the board attacking foes.

Over-all, this is a great set. It’s booster-box based so you may not get all the models you want, but if you buy a brick you’ll pretty much get what you need.

The range comes with the sort of accessories we’ve come to expect.  There’s a Dice and Token set (basically poker chips coupled with dice), and the tokens can be flipped to be used as bystanders, which is useful especially if you’re using  various scenarios. One of the bystanders is everyone’s favourite Asgardian mount, Mr Horse. It’s worth it for everyone’s favourite Yorkshire speaking, Union member flying animal, to be honest.

There’s also a Fast Forces pack for those of you who want the core figures without chasing through booster boxes. We get Thor, Black Widow, Black Panther, Loki, Enchantress  and Executioner. This is a well balanced team for two players, but perhaps not in the way you think. (Don’t make Loki fight Thor, for example).

Over all, a brilliant addition to Heroclix.
