You remember a few months ago it was announced that a film was going into production to be based on the stratospherically popular Internet meme Grumpy Cat? No, us neither. Anyway, it’s now been announced that Aubrey Plaza (PARKS AND RECREATION) will lend her dulcet tones of deadpan sarcasm to voice the misanthropic feline.

With the catchy title of GRUMPY CAT’S WORST CHRISTMAS EVER, the film is about a perpetually overlooked cat in a pet store and a 12-year-old girl named Chrystal who is able to communicate with her. The film will also feature cameos from other famous Internet memes, which depending on your point of view is either indicative of the naturally transmedia state of modern entertainment, or the equivalent of opening the first seal from the Book of Revelation, and a harbinger of the apocalypse.

Airing on Lifetime in November, the channel’s VP of original movies Arturo Interian described the film as, “a little HOME ALONE and a little DIE HARD,” and stated that Lifetime is, “so known for our heartfelt sentimentality that it will poke fun at those stereotypes.” Count us as tentatively intrigued.

From humble beginnings as a simple photo posted on Reddit a couple of years ago, Grumpy Cat –real name Tardar Sauce – has an official Facebook page with over six-and-a-half million likes, and is the basis for a company that produces mugs, coasters, t-shirts, books and plush toys; because the Internet is a weird and wonderful place that allows the occurrence of things that in any other circumstances would have no logical possibility of ever happening.

As well as P&R’s sardonic April Ludgate, Plaza has also played similarly acerbic characters in the likes of SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD and LIFE AFTER BETH, so in choosing the voice of a character somehow adorable and endearing despite her every word dripping with disdain, we can’t think of someone more suited to the role. Or as Tardar herself might say: “I see this makes you happy. Stop it.
