ANOTHER WOLFCOP

ANOTHER WOLFCOP

It’s been nearly three and a half years since the exploits of werewolf police officer Lou Garou hit screens around the world in the instant Canadian horror fave, WolfCop. Now that there’s Another WolfCop, viewers are treated to the further exploits of the lycanthropic lawman, and that means more music from the Sabbath-worshiping sextet, Shooting Guns.

Unlike Shooting Guns’ work for the first movie, the score for Another WolfCop comes across as a more-balanced release. The original WolfCop’s music veered between synthy tones or deep riffing, and several years had made quite a difference in the band’s music, because here, Shooting Guns puts together quite a few tracks which more ably blend the two elements.

Granted, there are still full-on chugging ragers like the album opener, Chaser, but pieces like Judge Recall pull ‘80s horror synths together with the group’s excellent stoner rock in a way that demonstrates just how much Shooting Guns has evolved. There’s even a Middle Eastern-influenced drone, Moon Dust, which goes way out into the ether in a way which is almost hypnotic.

Another Barn Burner is the album’s highlight, coming right near the end of the soundtrack’s second side, because it features Zach Low on additional guitar, meaning that there are a full three or four guitars on the track, in addition to synths, drums, and bass. It’s very loud, it’s very mad, and it’s positively wonderful. The track races by far too quickly, and it’s definitely worth lifting the needle up to play one more time.

The final track, On BluRay, is a clever little country number which also acts as a commercial for the film’s Blu-ray release. It’s the fun sort of bonus that makes soundtracks for movies like this so fun to spin.

The vinyl comes pressed on classic black, beer can brown, or — as we received — pink donut, and its heavyweight wax will sustain the many, many times listeners will be compelled to have this blast from their turntable. The cover art by The Dude Designs looks amazing, and while not quite as classily restrained as the artwork for the first film’s score, definitely does a better job of capturing the franchise’s aesthetic. There’s also a download code to enjoy all this music on the go, because this definitely needs some play on the road.

The album’s sides are, respectively, Liquor and Donuts, which is clever — although, it must be said that the use of a beer can’s pop-top for the center label is technically incorrect, because beer is a fermented beverage, whereas liquor refers to beverages which have been further distilled. Technically, a whiskey barrel would’ve been more correct, but it’s likely a safe bet that Officer Lou Garou isn’t aware of the distinction, so it’s probably best to just let it go.
