Whilst Marvel may have the clear advantage when it comes to live-action movies, the DC-based animated movies have been dominating their competition for decades now… which is why it’s even more exciting to hear that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment are to adapt arguably the greatest ever Joker story, The Killing Joke.

Following the premiere of the animated Justice League: Gods and Monsters at San Diego Comic-Con, plans were revealed for the next three DC Universe Original Movies. On the way for 2016 are Batman: The Killing Joke, Batman: Bad Blood and Justice League vs. Titans.

The Killing Joke itself is a classic story from Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, telling one version of The Joker’s origin story and showing the Clown Prince of Crime as a complete and utter maniac, including torturing Jim Gordon and paralysing Barbara Gordon. The iconic Bruce Timm will be executive producing the animated adaptation of this classic tale.

As for Batman: Bad Blood, this will be an original Dark Knight story that introduces Batwoman into the animated realm. Then there’s Justice League vs. Titans which brings the Teen Titans to their first DC Universe Original Movie, with the film seemingly doing exactly what it says on the tin.

For a long period of time the DC animated movies were always breathtakingly good, particular when it came to Batman, although the more New 52-based movies of recent years have been a little subpar. That said, there has been some stunning recent efforts like the two-part Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, not to mention the far more enjoyable than expected Justice League: Throne of Atlantis earlier this year.

Here’s hoping that the powers that be can now do justice to the legendary Killing Joke.
