Averaging an issue a year, it’s telling that the story inside the third entry in the Wolf Country series takes its time to wow and win you over. It’s a startling slow burn effort compared to the more action orientated approach to pitching werewolves and vampires against one another. Written by Jim Alexander, Wolf Country proves that Britain still has plenty of bite.
Luke Cooper, who was replaced by Will Pickering from the second issue, has a wonderful Clockwork Orange-inspired cover adorning this latest entry. Where Cooper had more of a stylised gothic approach, Pickering opts for a stark and Spartan take. In either case, the black and white panels are a great vehicle for the story, soaked in political and religious intrigue.
The prose has a stripped back and visceral quality, snaking between Bret Easton Ellis and Hunter S. Thompson. At its most simplistic, the story follows a vampire community who worship a great fanged god and are surrounded by tribes of werewolves. Issue 3 sees Zealot Halfpenny, a vampire maverick, put on the case, and makes for an unfettered look at both cultures.
With its western-style settings, politically charged story and candid art, Wolf Country is a silver bullet to the bloated heart of quirky bloodsuckers and dreary werewolves.
