Review: Think Tank / Author: Matt Hawkins / Artist: Rahsan Ekedal / Publisher: Top Cow / Release Date: Out Now

In a market filled with visions of the far future or people with utterly implausible powers, how refreshing to come across a comic book which is simply fiction about those who do science. Think Tank is set in the modern day and all of the remarkable devices deployed during the story are at least plausible; part of the gimmick here is that if it’s been in the pages of New Scientist or similar, then it’s fair play.

The plot is pretty straightforward. Egghead Dr. David Loren has begun to have serious doubts about the way the military are using his inventions, and decides to do something about it, with explosive, action-packed consequences. Techies should warm to this quite nicely, as there are plenty of well-utilized gadgets on display. The problem with Think Tank is Loren himself. Morphing from smug and arrogant to whiny and petulant, he’s an all too credible portrait of an irresponsible boffin of the sort who never grew up because he was too busy playing with his chemistry set, but he’s not a character you want to spend a great deal of time with. Still, this is a decent action adventure story which evokes the feel of TV spy shows in places. If you like the sound of a clever tech thriller with a touch of Tomorrow’s World, take a look.
