AUDIO REVIEW: THE OMEGA FACTOR AUDIOBOOK / AUTHOR: JACK GERSON / PUBLISHER: BIG FINISH / NARRATED BY: LOUISE JAMESON / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

In 1979, the BBC broadcast a show set in Edinburgh and dealing with supernatural events. One of the stars of that show was Louise Jameson, who played Dr. Anne Reynolds. To accompany the show, creator Jack Gerson also wrote a novel with the same name. This audio release is Louise Jameson reading that novel. The content is somewhat adult and not recommended for younger listeners.

The novel covers the first episode of the TV series and in fact takes almost half its time in doing so. The focus is on journalist Tom Crane, plagued by nightmares and in Edinburgh as part of a series of articles he is writing on the occult. He meets up with his wife’s friend, Anne Reynolds, who works for the mysterious military Department Seven. As he explores his emerging psychic powers, he comes across a dangerous foe determined to both test him and defeat him. The second half of the story closes down the elements of the first, while also embedding Tom deeper into the affairs of the department. This is very different from the TV series, which ended after ten episodes and was never renewed.

The reading covers six discs, broken down into chapters of around 30 minutes each.

Those familiar with Big Finish may need to take a moment to realise this is not a full cast/part cast drama with music and sound effects but simply Louise reading the story with some voice characterisation.

Big Finish released The Omega Factor Audiobook in September 2014; full details are available on their website for this and the upcoming full cast audios.

If you remember the original series, would like to know more before the new audio series is released in 2015, or would simply like some interesting and dark science fiction to listen to, you could do a lot worse than pick up a copy of this.
