Inde Navarrette is slowly lining up roles following her star-making turn in Obsession. Following her casting as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film, it’s been announced that the actress will star in The Waffle House Index, a sci-fi thriller package that was just picked up by Apple Original Films. Navarrette will also executive produce the project.

Andrew Nunnelly wrote the screenplay for the sci-fi picture, with Plan B Entertainment producing. Louis Paxton, whose Sundance film The Incomer releases in cinemas next month, is set to direct.

As for the tale behind the title, the Waffle House Index is an informal measure of a hurricane’s severity. The levels are based on how much service an area’s Waffle House, a 24/7 restaurant chain, is offering. Green indicates the restaurant is in full service; yellow means a limited menu and indicates low food supplies; red means a closed restaurant and signs of seriously unsafe weather conditions.

Nunnelly’s script, which was featured on the 2025 Black List, tells the story of a Waffle House waitress whose bad day gets worse when a stranger with a gun shows up during her night shift. What happens after involves no less than a mass flood, man-chomping crocodiles, a nuclear explosion, a magical bunker under the Waffle House, and some extra-terrestrials.
