A routine break-in at a remote country mansion takes a disastrous turn when one of the would-be robbers throws her back out. So begins a startling comedy of errors, directed by Raviv Ullman (of Phil of the Future fame) and Greg Yagolnitzer.
Lizzy Caplan stars as the older of two bickering sisters, although you wouldn’t know it from her irresponsible fuckup behaviour. She’s roped in her more sensible younger sibling (Lucy DeVito), who’s forced to abandon lookout duties when disaster strikes. With the clock ticking down until the man of the house returns, the race is on to scarper before they’re caught red-handed.
With a title like Drag, the onus is on the film’s writer-director duo to make sure that it isn’t one. Thankfully, it’s a black comedy triumph, smoothly building from the initial mishap to a situation which only gets worse with every step (and, in a two-story house with basement, there are a lot of steps!) And then, just when you think it couldn’t get any worse than that… yep, it gets worse again.
Should the Evil Dead franchise ever need a new final girl, it could do worse than Caplan – who endures a level of abuse hitherto reserved for Bruce Campbell and his Deadite-fighting proteges. There’s none of that here though (it’s more Home Alone meets that one episode of Inside No.9) and the indignities visited upon Caplan’s character are hilariously banal. Another easy joke would be to say that any back injury was caused by its star carrying the film. But DeVito goes toe-to-toe with her screen sister to score some of the biggest laughs. The pair share a wonderful sense of chemistry and, while their bickering can get exhausting, the film never outstays its welcome. Be careful not to overlook John Stamos either, delivering his best work as a pretentious artist with a house full of duct tape and jagged edges.
For a film that gets as unbelievably dark as it does, it’s also very funny, balancing a snappy script and unexpected storytelling with rounds of sphincter-punishing violence. Drag is anything but.
DRAG premiered at Tubi FrightFest on August 28,2026.
