An Indie horror film which encapsulates the terror of hanging out with an old friend who’s started to go a bit funny in their encroaching middle age. Blood Secret stars Tiana Akers as mild-mannered Madison, a woman whose plans for a cosy night in are derailed by her best pal’s sudden spate of shady behaviour.

Antsy Anna (Katherine Lozon) isn’t the only one acting strangely either – as things start going bump in the night early evening, Madison begins to suspect that there are supernatural forces at
play. Congealed spaghetti, burning bolognese sauce and spilled coffee beans all serve as terrible omens, but just how much danger is Madison in? And from whom exactly?

Following up on his 2025 FrightFest hit Cover, writer and director Cameron Francis returns with another tense two-hander, set entirely in Anna’s home. The stakes, like the budget, are low, but
Francis keeps a tight hold on the reins as the tension ramps up, one unnerving occurrence after another. Its version of the haunted (?) house is sillier than most, but the somewhat tongue-in-
cheek approach doesn’t distract from the solid performances at the film’s core.

Akers is particularly magnetic as Madison, keeping Blood Secret grounded in the face of goofy interlopers (Garin Jones as a Jackass named Steve-O), predictable plot twists and no-frills scares.
It all comes (or stays) home during a finale which manages to pack in a couple of truly gnarly sequences between rounds of camp. What Madison ultimately discovers isn’t a massive shock,
but Francis and the cast commit to the bit with good humour and an infectious sense of enthusiasm.

Blood Secret isn’t likely to blow anyone’s minds, but it’s one worth keeping regardless.
