While at a book signing, author Danny (Chris Mills) and his wife, Casey (Annabella Rich), leave a babysitter, Jess (Francesca Louise White), to look after their young child. On returning home, they find Jess slain and intruders still inside the house. Following a struggle, Casey is stabbed and technically dies for a moment. Their child is also killed. Months later, after recuperating in a sanatorium, Casey is brought to the new home Danny has arranged for her. She struggles to adapt and begins to see shapes and people in her peripheral vision. Convinced she’s cursed, Danny reluctantly brings in noted psychic Reynolds (Nicholas Vince) to help out. Meanwhile, Danny seeks help in the form of a group for bereaved men. It’s here he meets Joe (Johnny Vivash), who’s mourning his wife. Reynolds hypnotises Casey to face her demons but it doesn’t go exactly to plan.
An impressive directorial debut for actor Annabelle Rich, The Death of Us is fraught with emotion, not surprising considering its heavy themes of the loss of a child as well as having to deal with everything afterwards. It’s so convincing that the horror element could be irrelevant. When that comes, however, it’s strikingly gruesome.
