Raj Poojara’s show DICE is a show about the choices you make in life, and the illusion of choice. Dice is about a single throw of a cube, and yes, die would be a more accurate description of a singular die, but as Raj himself points out, that makes it sound like a completely different show.
So many new comedians make the mistake of combining self-effacing humour with emotional investment in order to draw audiences in. It works most of the time, but can wear thin quickly. Raj Poojara avoids this trap by being very confident in himself, but also humble enough to realise that his stories are a small part of a bigger world. Grounded, but confident. Clever yet relatable. Or to put it another way, really good.
Raj spins his tale about making one big choice with a quiet charisma and well-observed charm. There’s a razor-sharp insight behind it all, but this is enhanced with a warmth of spirit and kindness that effectively makes the whole show like a memorable and late-night chat with a stranger. At times it feels like career advice from someone who actually cares, and that’s rather nice.
The humour is a mix of straight-up gags and shaggy-dog style observational comedy. A blend between pop-culture references and drawn-out returning bits about mundane stuff made hilarious through circumstance. This makes for a show so funny that sometimes we almost forgot our breath.
Funny, relatable and warm, Raj is one to watch; we expect to see much more from this talented chap in the future.
