Flight is an immersive show likely to appeal to fans of shows like LOST and FRINGE. The set-up is pretty simple; as you queue up to enter the show, you’re handed a ticket for your flight. Close examination tells you where to sit (which is useful), but the ticket itself seems a little off. This is a show about a trip on a commercial airline that goes a bit wrong.

Once in your assigned seat, you pop on the provided headphones, and there’s a short moment in which the lights go out (and then back on), and any passenger who doesn’t want to go on this ride can leave. Overhead TV’s tell us what to expect from the ‘journey’, but of course they buzz and flicker in a way that implies all is not what it seems. Though you’re actually in a modified shipping container in Scotland’s capital city, for the briefest of moments, you will believe you’ve been transported to a terrible, terrible flight.

Darkfield have made a name for themselves by producing genre-savvy interactive shows that come with their own venue; namely, each show is hosted inside a shipping container. Which means they can just move the entire set around the world as they see fit. This is an impressive feat, especially when the container for this show buzzes and shakes as the story unfolds.
It’s an impressive and entirely stationary ‘dark ride’ which uses every trick in the book to tell a rather creepy science fiction story, and that’s part of the problem for STARBURST readers; this is a fun show, but you’ll see FLIGHT’s message coming from a mile (above sea level) away. FLIGHT is not a must-see show, but the shows are only 30 minutes long, and there are lots of slots available. A fantastic roller-coaster-like experience to squeeze into your busy roster of Edinburgh Fringe shows.
