APOCALIPSYNC [Edinburgh Fringe]

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted everything in the world one way or another, but one of the more interesting results is the way it changed the way that we tell stories to each other. Apocalipsync is Luciano Rosso’s one-man, physical comedy and dance/performance art show about isolation and the end of the world as we know it.

Using some very well-staged back projection, an amazing soundtrack and carefully placed props, Luciano uses a blend of clowning, mime, dance and lip-syncing to convey the story of one man trying to make it through a global pandemic with his sanity intact.  This would be a tough topic just using conventional theatre, but the fact that this is a show that tells the tale through dance and mime is simply remarkable.

This is a vibrant, physical show that bears a deep and fairly message about surviving despite the odds. It also features comedic bits that are a lot of fun (and showcase Rosso’s talents quite well) but actually add nothing to the narrative.  This leaves the show feeling fairly disjointed at points, but the performance is so strong that it hardly matters.

Apocalipsync is one of those shows that is very much of the moment, and is worth seeking out now before it loses anymore cultural relevance; alas, the world has moved on in terms of the apocalypse. Luciano Rosso is a genius, however, and if we don’t see his talents on some sort of big deal variety performance show in the next couple of years, we’d be very surprised.
