Heroclix is a superhero miniatures game that is both easy to play but also tactically interesting enough to be fun to fans of all ages. The game has been around since 2002 and its current iteration is fast, smooth and very playable. It’s main appeal is that you can pitch super-heroes from all sorts of continuities and stories against each other. Fantastic Four Cosmic Clash is, as the name suggests, a set that features Marvel’s first family, The Fantastic Four. It also has two other character; the iconic Doctor Doom and the cosmic dude himself, The Silver Surfer.
What makes this set a big deal is that we’ve not had the Fantastic Four released as Heroclix for a fair few years, and getting them in one set is something likely to delight collectors. Unlike previous releases, these models are well painted, finely sculpted and designed be easy to handle. For example the Silver Surfer’s pose is dynamic but he’s not flying so far off his base that he’ll fall off. He also has a cool ‘Kirby dots’ effect coming out of his hand; it’s really eye-catching
Similarly Doctor Doom makes for a striking figure that’s walked straight out of the pages of a comic book. The design on his flowing cape is dynamic and he’s posed firing some sort of translucent fireball from his palm. Both the Surfer and Doom have stat cards that let you run them as 300 point characters; that’s one model that’s powerful enough to take on a whole team.
A team such as the Fantastic Four. The Invisible Woman’s model is powerful, as Sue balances on her own force fields. She’s also a powerhouse, rules wise. Mr Fantastic is mostly strategic support; his sculpt is rather menacing as he’s contorted into springy looking battle shape. The Human Torch and The Thing both look powerful and boy can they do the damage. As team they are, as you’d expect, fantastic.
As a collector’s piece, Fantastic Four Cosmic is great, but it’s also awesome as a starter set. It accomodates up to three players and a single game should only take an hour or so. We get two dice (the 4 is of course, the Fantastic Four logo), maps, counters, rules and scenarios. They’re great maps; plenty to get your teeth into tactically . Overall this is a great set and if you like miniatures games or super heroes, check this out.
