JESSICA JONES: BLIND SPOT #1

WRITER: KELLY THOMPSON | ARTIST: MATTIA DE IULIS | PUBLISHER: MARVEL | FORMAT: SINGLE ISSUE | RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

Pulling you right back into the grinding day-to-day of Jessica Jones by showing her superhero Jewel look at the beginning, and by briefly mentioning her happy relationship with partner Luke Cage, the path escalates rapidly when the police arrest Jones due to finding a dead woman in the Alias Investigations office.

While constantly questioning her own personal choices – Jones has always struggled to be content – and interacting with detectives in a polaroid snapshot style (which comic artist Mattia De Iulis finely executes), trouble continues to fly towards her in a fashion that she’s more than used to. With typewritten locations bookmarking the dialogue, and Jones herself narrating in the background, it’s apparent that in Blind Spot, the writing has gone all out to nail all of the baseline configurations that make Jessica Jones who she is. As the detective-like enquiry moves forward with another familiar face making an appearance, and with the mysterious body – unfortunately for Jones – lining up with an old, not fully resolved client case file, it all mounts up to a shocking and unexpected ending. One that’ll have you already eagerly waiting for the next issue to arrive. For long-time comic book fans of Jones’ or for those that discovered her through the glorious Netflix series, there’s a spectacularly familiar continuation here that’ll make you want to read on.

Confessing her appreciation for the writing opportunity, Kelly Thompson concludes the issue by explaining her life-long admiration for the character, and if this output by itself is anything to go by, then it looks like this excursion will become a much-welcomed addition to the ever-expanding Marvel galaxy.
