It’s been 24 years since Nintendo’s little green dinosaur first got his own game, and now Yoshi has arrived on Switch, exchanging his previous yarn material for some cardboard and sticky-backed plastic.
Like previous entries in the series, Yoshi’s Crafted World is a 2D platformer, with the ability to eat enemies and turn them into eggs. As well as throwing eggs into the 2D plane around you, you’re also able to throw them at objects in the foreground and background.
For the most part, the platforming itself isn’t particularly challenging, nor are most of the puzzles – the real challenge here is finding everything. Each level contains around 7 flowers, and 20 red coins. The flowers can be fairly tough to find, but it’s the red coins that are the most difficult.
On top of these collectables, each level also has a reverse, where the level flips around and you play the whole thing backwards, attempting to pick up 3 little Poochie pups hidden throughout the level, usually giving away their location by barking. It’s a credit to the designers that they were able to create levels that can be played both backwards and forwards.
Further collectables can be found in the form of a scavenger hunt. You’re given an item to find a certain amount of in each level – once done, you’ll be given another item to find. Unfortunately, the back and forth here is a bit of a bore – just being given the list for all of them initially would have been a much more fun way of doing it.
From the beginning, the game is stunning and full of charm, with the designers clearly having a lot of fun with the art style, like the stop motion boss creations which are fantastic. There are a wide variety of different levels – there’s one where you balance on a car to attempt to win a Mario Kart-style race, a stealth level where you must stay in the shadows to avoid setting alarms off, and one where you’re being chased by an axe murderer in the dark (!).
The end game boss is particularly enjoyable, and beating it opens up a few extra tough levels. Although you’re going to need to find a lot flowers to see them all…
Overall, Yoshi is a fun if slightly repetitive experience. It’s certainly aimed at a younger audience, although we still thoroughly enjoyed our time with it.
