HACK/SLASH: RESURRECTION

Cassie Hack, the slasher of slashers who has given herself the thankless task of taking out supernatural killers, is back, literally from the wilderness.

After spending five years in isolation – apart from the odd zombie knocking on her window – our heroine gets a message that she is needed as a counsellor at a camp for children, Camp Indigo River, to help kids who have gone suffered trauma through extreme violence.

Turning up, Cassie finds that it is run by a mother and daughter, Laurie, who Cassie falls in lust with, but all is not as it seems. It appears that Dr Chase at the local prison has been experimenting and creating those zombies that are getting a little too close to the camp and he has more than a small interest in Cassie herself.

As usual, Cassie is not being given the full picture and there are plenty of surprises, including the return of an old friend. As Cassie starts to peel away the veneer of what the camp is purported to be, she starts to realise that she may struggle to escape with her life and even her sanity intact as

Encompassing six issues, the artwork is fun and vibrant, as you’d expect from this title (if you haven’t read any of it before, go and buy the omnibus editions right now!), and the story keeps jogging along at a cracking pace. Although the overall plot is slightly thin, this sits nicely into the universe that Hack/Slash has created. It’s great to see that Tim Seeley’s creation is in good hands, ably assisted by an edit by the big man himself. There’s plenty of gore as usual and Resurrection gives the series an opportunity to branch off in some new directions.

The only shame here is that there is a missed opportunity to tell a tale that would perfectly play in a world that exists in horror movies set in camps.

It’s impossible not to root for Cassie every time you read her adventures, even if her choices can be somewhat knee-jerk and driven by her emotions, but that’s another side of the story that makes you realise that the overall arc of her journey is far from over.

Hopefully, we’ll see more stories and adventures in this universe for many years to come.
