In an interview with Connected Digital World, it has been confirmed that the much-anticipated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will not be coming to the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360.

In the video, story writer Jakub Szamalek stated the developers fear that what they created was “too huge, too detailed to put on the current generation consoles.” They did not wish to compromise the quality of their games or scale down the size of the world, supposedly one several times the scale of Skyrim, by being forced to utilise aging technology. Szamalek further backed this up with his statements that “This is why we are really excited that our work with The Witcher 3 coincided with this new generation, because we can finally create a world which is the size we wanted to be with the level of detail and care put into The Witcher 2.”

This combined with statements from CD Projekt RED that they would be pushing Playstation 4 hardware for greater performance means the developer is visibly placing emphasis upon quality over purely sales.

This news might draw the ire of PS3 and 360 owners, but it is none the less good news. Players have been seeking a major leap forwards with titles appearing on consoles and those currently available have been limited to say the least.  Killzone and Knack both did little to truly make use of the new technology at hand and many others such as Assassin’s Creed 4 were designed do they could still be released on outdated technology. This could be the final proof that the next generation is worth buying, while at the same time not holding back PC releases with obvious limitations present in the game.

The Witcher 3 is expected to be released sometime in 2014, meaning fans still have quite a long time to wait yet. Let’s hope that this promising sign of utilising all available modern technology means we’ll be seeing another success from the series next year.
