The UK has a long history of science fiction conventions, dating back to 1891. Eastercon is traditionally organised around Easter weekend by voluntary self-organising committees, rather than a permanent entity. It has been around since the 1940s. The BFSA Awards first launched in 1970 and has been a fixture of Eastercon ever since.
