There will be no second season for Netflix’s mystery-thriller, science fiction series 1899. The show’s creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar (the duo is also behind the excellent German-language drama Dark), broke the news on Instagram.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” they wrote. “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure.”

1899 is an eight-episode series following a group of European emigrants travelling from Southampton, UK on a steamship named Kerberos to start new lives in New York City. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift at sea. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare.

The series starred Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau.

It’s an outcome that has disappointed fans and leaves many storylines unresolved – so here’s hoping that 1899 gets picked up by another network, or that Netflix will return to the series with a one-off special.
