We’ve had talk of some sort of Dark Crystal follow-up happening for decades now, but it’s finally happening.

Boom! Studios and the Henson Company have confirmed that the 12-part The Power of the Dark Crystal comic is on the way, which will actually be based on an unproduced screenplay.

The official press release on this reads as follows:

After more than three decades, it’s finally time to return to the world of Thra, with BOOM! Studios announcing a sequel to Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s fantasy movie The Dark Crystal, based on plans for the movie follow-up that never happened.

The 12-issue series, titled The Power of the Dark Crystal will be adapted by British writer Si Spurrier from an unproduced screenplay by David Odell, Annette Odell and Craig Pearce, with art by Kelly and Nichole Matthews. The cover for the first issue comes from the Eisner Award-winning Jae Lee, with colors by June Chung.

The series is set decades after events of 1982’s The Dark Crystal, with Jen and Kira distracted by the pressures of ruling Thra and no longer in touch with the needs of the people — which provokes a Fireling called Thurma to set out to steal a shard of the Dark Crystal with which she intends to restore power to her realm. Unfortunately, that mission might also restore the Skeksis, as well…

The origins of Power lie in 2005, when the Jim Henson Company originally announced plans to develop a sequel to the original movie, with Genndy Tartakovsky and Brian Froud attached to the project at various times during the process, which included partnering with Australian production company Omnilab Media. As recently as 2014, the project was still being discussed as being in active, if slow, development.

In a statement, Lisa Henson, President and CEO of the Jim Henson Company, said that “the creativity that went into writing and designing the feature film was such that we wanted our fans to be able to see and enjoy it now through this comic book series. We are very proud of the story that the screenwriters David Odell, Annette Odell, and Craig Pearce wrote. Our partners at Archaia and BOOM! Studios are the only people we could trust to expand and illustrate the story, and we are thrilled that it will soon see the light of day!”

The Power of the Dark Crystal No. 1 will be released digitally and in comic stores Feb. 15, 2017, launching a celebration for the movie’s 35th anniversary.

As an added bonus, the full cover has been revealed for the first issue of The Power of the Dark Crystal, which you can find below:
