Recovered from the dourness and boo-boo faces of this year’s Batman v Superman yet? Suicide Squad still not fully brightened your mood? Well it could be that Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman will be the DC movie to finally throw some light into the world that Warner Brothers has been constructing.

One of the most constant complains from moviegoers has been that the DCEU is too gloomy, but Wonder Woman producer Deborah Snyder has moved to reassure fans that the Gal Gadot-starrer will be changing things.

Speaking to Variety, Snyder explained, “Wonder Woman is very different in tone and style than Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. We pick directors who have their own points of view, so that each of our films will have their own personality.”

Director Patty Jenkins went one step further, comparing the film’s tone to that of Dick Donner’s iconic Superman. Jenkins enthused, “Superman was all about you. It was about you watching and realizing what it would feel like to have great powers and do great things. It was full of love and emotion.”

Looking to further assure fans, DC Entertainment’s Diane Nelson added, “There’s a misconception that DC or Warner Bros. has made a conscious decision for all our movies to be darker or edgier. That’s not the case. Fans of the DC Universe know that there are characters, like Batman, who are darker, but there are others like Wonder Woman, who are hopeful, optimistic leaders, and the tone of this film represents that. Patty brought a beauty and a sense of lightness or humour, and a little romance to it. It’s a very aspirational movie.”

Hopeful, optimistic leader? Surely that’s equally a term that could and should be applied to Superman, yet Warner Brothers has managed to make a right old mess of the Man of Steel so far in this DCEU… Still, Gal Gadot’s Diana was one of the brightest lights of Batman v Superman, so here’s hoping that she shines even more when her own movie comes around on June 2nd, 2017.

As well as Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, the Amazon will also be front-and-centre in Zack Snyder’s November 2017 Justice League.
