It seems as if The Wizard of Oz has been adapted a million times by this stage in the game, and now comes word that New Line Cinema are developing another new take on L. Frank Baum’s famed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. What marks this new take as an intriguing beast, though, is that it’s being developed as a straight-up horror movie.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, with New Line moving forward with a pitch from Mike Van Waes for what’s being described as an original horror movie set within the great world of The Wizard of Oz. No further details at all are known at this early stage, including how, if at all, this horror tale will tie in with the standard narrative of what we’ve come to know from this world.

The most famous and beloved take on this property was, of course, 1939’s Judy Garland-headlined The Wizard of Oz, and more recently we were given Sam Raimi’s 2013 Oz the Great and the Powerful, not to mention NBC’s current series, Emerald City.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
