Last week, we brought word that William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were being lined up for roles in Roberto Orci’s STAR TREK 3. Well Shatner has now confirmed that he has indeed been approached for to return as James T. Kirk in the third of the relaunched STAR TREK franchise.

Speaking at the Wizard World Nashville Comic-Con, as reported by ComicMovie, Shatner revealed that J.J. Abrams actually approached him for a role in STAR TREK 3. Shatner claimed that Abrams said, “I’m calling, Bill, because the director of the STAR TREK movie, the next one, has had an idea where you might be involved in it. So I am calling to see if you would be interested.” Abrams, of course, directed the first two installments of this new series of movies.

On whether he’ll take the gig, Shatner added, “Oh, yeah. If it is meaningful. They might want Leonard and myself. How do you get me fifty years later into the movie? I know it’s science fiction, but even I couldn’t come up with an idea.”

Whether Shatner and Nimoy do indeed make an appearance in STAR TREK 3, we’ll have to wait and see. At present, it’s believed that the film is targeting a 2016 release to coincide with the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
