In some rather brilliant casting news, Willem Dafoe has been brought in to voice Ryuk the Shinigami in Adam Wingard’s eagerly-anticipated Death Note adaptation.

Dafoe, best known to many a genre fan for playing Norman Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy amongst a career full of notable performances, is seemingly a perfect choice to play the demonic entity that causes so much damage in Death Note.

The current blurb on the upcoming Netflix-exclusive live-action adaptation reads:

Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds with it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

Willem Dafoe joins a cast the currently features Nat Wolff as Light Turner, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield as L, Paul Nakauchi as Watari, and Shea Whigham as James Turner.

Death Note began as a fan-favourite manga from Tusgumi Ohba and Takeshi Obati, with this upcoming adaptation set to hit Netflix next year.
